Space Travel beyond Time

Through a series of drawing and painting, I intend to become a space traveler beyond time and express my personal perception towards the process of cycle which governs all of our lives.

When I walk on a street, or I am on a journey, I happen to encounter some buildings. These buildings are remembered as special existences that my personal feelings are infused. Spatial experiences of those buildings make me sense both visible and invisible changes of time. Buildings are constructed in an empty space, generating new space. Afterwards, it degenerates with its own history kept and enters the stage of perishing. This process shows the cyclic phenomenon that is granted to all existence. In order to visualize this concept of cycle, I borrow the images of buildings that are created from special relationships stemmed from my personal experiences and also architectural sculptures that represent an era. Furthermore, by arranging trivial surrounding objects with them, my goal is to create their own virtual space.

During this process, on my paintings, I apply objects, shapes or colors that symbolize the fundamental components of five elements which are based on oriental philosophy conceiving laws of nature. Thus, in my works, both material and nonmaterial existences are embodied and comprehended as a repetitive cycle. This phenomenon is interpreted as repeating and expanding ‘spiral’. While I passively accept this process, I act as an active agent on my own and attempt to intervene this cyclic process. Overall, my aspiration for an existence symbolized as an archetype steadfast in the center of this change, is also included in my works.

Meanwhile, in plastic perception, my works have several features related to lines, colors and simplified forms.

The black lines that appear on my paintings suggest continuity. They are used for composition and outlines of objects to conserve their independence. As those lines are precisely measured and sharply drawn, they may seem rigid and inflexible, but their inconsistent thickness evokes lingering imagery which symbolizes continuity.

Apart from the lines that are measured in precision, the colors applied on my works are selected by intuition. The most important thing when it comes to selecting colors is to reveal the insistence of spaces and objects of my paintings. Complementary colors are sometimes used to invoke tension, however lines are used simultaneously to bring reconciliation.

With those lines and colors, my paintings show flat and simplified forms. The reason for simplifying objects’ description is to emphasize their substance and symbolism using basic forms.

Through my works, I am on an endless journey in conceptual space seeking an archetype which is originated in real forms obtained by my actual experience.
